Honours List 2016

For services to the judiciary.

The Honourable Justice Terence Arnold was

appointed a Supreme Court Judge in June 2013,

having previously been a Judge of the High Court

and Court of Appeal since 2006.

Terence was Solicitor-General and Chief

Executive of the Crown Law Office from 2000

to 2006. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel

in 1997. He was a partner at Chapman Tripp

Sheffield Young from 1985 to 1994. From 1970

to 1982 he taught at law schools in New Zealand

and Canada, developing a particular interest in

clinical legal education.

From 1986 to 1988 he was member of the Bill of

Rights Monitoring Group advising the Minister

of Justice on the establishment of the Bill of

Rights. He was a founding member of the Law

and Economics Association of New Zealand,

was its president from 1996 to 1997 and is

presently its patron. He was closely involved

in the establishment of the New Zealand Law

Society Litigation Skills Programme and the

Civil Litigation Skills Programme. He has given

seminars and papers for the New Zealand Law

Society and other professional bodies. He was a

member of the Market Surveillance Committee

of the New Zealand Electricity Market from 1996

to 2000, and was appointed to two standing

committees of the Market Surveillance Panel of

the New Zealand Stock Exchange.

Terence is a trustee of the Douglas Wilson

Advocacy Scholarship Trust.
