Level 3 NCEA (Year 13)

The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 3) will follow the same format as NCEA

Levels 1 and 2. It will be a mixture of external and internal Achievement and/or Unit Standards and

Unit Standards that generate credits on the Qualifications Framework.

For NCEA Level 3 you will need to achieve 80 credits, of which 60 must be at Level 3 or above, and

20 at Level 2 or above.

ENTRY TO UNIVERSITY

NZQA in consultation with the New Zealand University Vice-Chancellors’ Committee has stated that

NCEA entry requirements for University will be:

Achievement of

NCEA Level 3

60 credits at Level 3 or higher and 20 credits at Level 2 or higher.

14 credits in

each of three

subjects from the list of approved subjects.

The remaining credits to achieve NCEA Level 3 may come from either achievement or unit

standards.

UE numeracy

: 10 credits at Level 1 or higher from

-

specified achievement standards or

-

three specific numeracy unit standards 10 credits

UE literacy

: 10 credits (five in reading and five in writing) from

-

specific Level 2 and higher achievement standards, or

-

specific Te Reo Maori and Te Reo Rangatira Level 2 standards, or

-

Two specific level 4 English for academic purposes unit standards, or

-

An academic literacy common assessment tool (CAT) at Level 3 (no credit value,

run by NZQA)

Individual universities are now setting their own entry requirements –

these change

regularly. You must check with Ms Straight, the careers advisor and/or the university websites.

Examples are:

Canterbury University:

Entry to certain courses

You must gain University Entrance and NCEA Level 3 with an entry score of at least 120 points for

preferential entry to certain courses (see

www.canterbury.ac.nz/liaison

). A place will be offered to

all students who gain University Entrance but not all courses

Auckland University:

You must gain University Entrance and then apply for selection to a programme. For selection you

will be allocated a rank score based on your best 80 credits at Level 3 or higher over a maximum of

5 approved UE subjects, weighted by the level of achievement attained in each set of credits. You

are strongly advised to take achievement standards as preparation for University studies.

Victoria University:

You must gain University Entrance and achieve the guaranteed entry score of 120 points. This is a

rank score based on 80 best credits in University Entrance approved subjects at Level 3 or higher,

and weighted by the level of achievement. You can count achievement and unit standards but are

advised to take approved subjects and achievement standards.
