Festival of the Spoken Word

The Festival of the Spoken Word

featured a number of outstanding

speakers and interesting topics. All

speakers were excellent but there

could only be one winner for each

level up to Year 12. Congratulations to:

Year 9: Mitchell Radcliffe; Year 10:

Lizzie Stevenson; Year 11: April Oakley;

Year 12: Alex Lye.

Jazz

At the Southern Jam Jazz Festival

in Marlborough, the Big Band were

awarded gold in the Big Band category

and walked away the competition’s

overall champions. Other medal wins

included a gold for the Jazz Combo in

the Jazz Small Ensemble event and

a silver for the Junior Jazz Band, for

the third year in a row. A number of

individual awards were presented to

StAC students: Ben Rainey (Year 12)

for Best Trombone, Gus Ellerm

(Year 12) for Best Trumpet, Sam Hollis

(Year 13) for Best Bass and Liam

Murray (Year 13) for Best Rhythm

Section Musician.

Orchestra

The St Andrew’s College Orchestra,

made up of students from Years 4–13,

took part in the Christchurch Schools’

Orchestra Festival at the Aurora Centre

in Burnside. Among the performances

they played a stunning rendition of

Verdi’s

Grand March from Aida

.

Vocal

At the Dunedin Junior Vocal

competitions, two StAC students

excelled. Frances Campbell (Year

13) and Harry Grigg (Year 13) were

the winners of the 16 and U18 years

with Francis taking home the Otago

Daily Times Recital Cup, Madelene

Barkman Cup for national song,

Dunedin Civic Choir Scholarship Cup,

Winners of Best Film Sophie Wells and

Ella Harris.

Chambers Family Award test song,

Twelfth Fred Fok Challenge Cup for

folk song and the Lady Celia Wright

Tray song in character. Harry was

awarded the Gladys Hedley Rosebowl

for the highest combined score in

sacred song and vocal solo, the

Brandwell Moller Cup for popular

song and the cup for vocal solo.

Frances and Harry jointly won the

Rush Family Trophy for action duet

and Craig Family Trophy for vocal duet.

Harry and Frances have also been

selected for the 2015 NZ Opera Chorus

alongside Nathaniel McClintock

(Year 13) who has been named as a

first reserve.

Harry, who recently appeared as

Tenor soloist with the CSO at their

annual Proms concert, has been

awarded both the 2014 Dame Malvina

Major Cecily Maccoll Scholarship

and a Hurunui District Council

Secondary School Young Achievers

Award for singing. He will put these

funds towards his Bachelor of Music

degree program majoring in vocal

performance at Otago next year.

Archie Milligan (Year 7) and Danielle

Musgrave (Year 6) recently appeared

in the Riccarton Players production

of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical

‘The Likes of Us’ with Archie taking

a lead and Danielle a member of the

children’s ensemble.

Daniel Bridgman (Year 4) will be one

of two boys sharing the singing role of

Tiny Tim in the upcoming Royal New

Zealand ‘Does Dickens’ production at

the Isaac Theatre Royal.

Emma Williams (Year 11) performing in the

Orchestra at the Christchurch Orchestra

Festival.

Joseph Yoon (Year 10)
