There was an air of fantasy fun across
the Preparatory School earlier this
term as students dived into Book
Week with great enthusiasm. This year
the theme was
Magical Fantastical
covering everything from Harry Potter
to Alice in Wonderland.
There were some great competitions
including a scavenger hunt identifying
magical characters, a Lord of the
Rings challenge, and Six Word Book
Summary competition. In one of the
best ever turnouts for the Book Parade,
there were mini-supermans and hulks,
Harry Potters and a gaggle of Cats in
the Hats who marched to celebrate the
wonder of the written word.
The biggest hit of the week was the
ornate, wooden carved chair and the
sorting hat all the way from ‘Hogwarts’.
“The students got the chance to sit in
the chair, wear the sorting hat and
complete an online quiz (computer
magic!) which told them which
Hogwarts house they were in,”
says Head of Library Services,
Cathy Kennedy.
Cathy says Book Week is eagerly
anticipated every year especially the
Battle of the Books competition. “This
is an interclass literature quiz which
runs daily and the classes compete
with each other – no ‘googling’, just
the library and the library catalogue.
This year a quiz ran for Years 6–8 and
another one (for the first time) for
Years 3–5. Winning classes were 8C
(Mrs Preston) and 5C (Mrs Clark).”
