Following
There’s a story that is often told around St Andrew’s, a
story that illustrates the culture of philanthropy here at
our College. Often told by staff and Old Collegians, the
tale tells of StAC students from the 1950s who helped
raise money for the Memorial Chapel by selling ‘bricks’
for the Chapel. A target of £1000 was set and students
went about selling paper tickets (‘bricks’) illustrated with
the Memorial Chapel with each ticket representing one
brick. Reading back through the 1954–1955 Collegian
yearbook it is clear to see that the College’s desire for
a Chapel and the associated fundraising drive was very
similar to our need now. The Collegian notes with pride
that the target was reached!
Sixty years later our community is fundraising once
again, this time for a new Chapel, the Sports and
Cultural Centre and Foundation. Community members
are following in the footsteps of those students from
the 1950s by bringing their brick donation boxes to the
College filled with spare change. Brick donation boxes
were sent out to community members as part of their
STEP materials in April this year.
We are delighted to report that we have started to receive your brick
donation boxes that you received as part of the STEP campaign
mail out. Donors of all ages are giving their spare change to the
campaign, including Peter Olds (1934), who at 93 is one of our oldest
Old Collegians and Holly Goddard, who is eight and in the Preparatory
School.
Be a part
Buy a brick
To recognise the generosity of donors who have given $3,000 or more there are two initiatives
in which donors can participate.
Two thousand of the original bricks from the
Memorial Chapel have been carefully salvaged and
will be incorporated into the new design as part of the
memorial wall. Bricks are available for purchase at
$3,000 each, which can be paid over five years at the
cost of $50.00 per month. This donation will go to the
Chapel fund. All donors of this level or above will have
their name or family’s name recorded on a plaque.
Buy a note
Donors to the Sports and Cultural Centre and to the
St Andrew’s College Foundation can buy a ‘note’ from the
College song, which will be displayed in the Sports and
Cultural Centre. The cost of a ‘note’ is $3,000 and can be
paid over five years at $50.00 per month. All donors of
this level or above will have their name or family’s name
recorded on a plaque.
