Karting

Marcus Armstrong (Year 9) took part in

the KF World Championships in Paris.

Orienteering

At the Canterbury Schools’

Orienteering Competition in Opawa,

Aytron Shadbolt (Year 8) won the

Years 7–8 boys, Yonni Kepes (Year 9)

placed third in the junior boys category

and Isaac Egan (Year 9) came second

in the intermediate boys event. In the

long distance event at Kairaki Beach,

Lachlan Wells (Year 9) came second

and Yonni Kepes third in the junior

boys, and Dougal Shepherd (Year 9)

was third in the intermediate boys

event.

Sixteen students from StAC (in two

teams of eight) competed in the Get to

Go Challenge for Years 9 and 10 at the

end of Term 3. The StAC mixed team

placed third out of 24 teams, while the

all-boys team placed fourteenth.

Rugby

The First XV beat St Bede’s 22–13,

the first time the team has beaten

St Bede’s since 2001. The Second

XV also won their third division final

against St Bede’s 44–14, to take their

first title in seven years. The U15B

team also won its grade.

Skiing and Snowboarding

Eliza Grigg (Year 13) recorded the

fasted overall time and was the first

girl home in the Canterbury Skiing and

Snowboarding Championships. George

Boanas (Year 11) and Carlos Garcia

Knight (Year 13) finished second in

their respective events.

Carlos finished off an excellent

season as Snowsports New Zealand’s

Snowboarder of the Year. Carlos

placed seventh (Slopestyle) and

twelfth (Half Pipe) at the Junior World

Championships in Italy, after finishing

overall first and Under 18 winner in

the New Zealand Junior Nationals.

Awards

A number of StAC students were

awarded excellence badges for their

chosen sports at the School Sport

Canterbury Winter Sports Awards:

Badminton (Michael Chim, Peter Yu,

Chris Zhu); Duathlon (Ray McKenzie);

Hockey (Edward Batt, Matt Cummins,

Lawrence Darling, Macky Fisher,

Andre Fremaux, Alastair Harvey, Sam

Lane, Finnian Loader, William Mace-

Cochrane, Joshua Mariu, Joshua

Morrison, Jacob Pearce, Jack Piggott,

Zin South, Wil Undy, Joseph Yoon);

Skiing (Eliza Grigg, George Boanas,

Jimmy Field); Snowboarding: (Carlos

Garcia Knight, Michael Campbell,

Ruby Murray).

Surf Lifesaving

Zoe Merrick (Year 13), who is a

member of the Taylor’s Mistake Surf

Lifesaving Club, competed in the

World Surf Lifesaving Championships

in Montpellier, in the Open Women’s

IRB boating category. She won silvers

in Open Team Rescue, Women’s Team

Rescue and Women’s Single Rescue,

and a bronze in Women’s Mass Rescue.

Zoe’s team placed first overall, making

Zoe a member of the World Champion

team for 2014.

Surfing

Rory Edmonds (Year 13) represented

Canterbury at the National Secondary

Schools’ Championship in Taranaki

where he made it through to the

semi-finals.

Trampolining

Kirsty Shields (Year 9) and Lizzie

Stevenson (Year 10) competed at the

National Trampolining Championships

in Auckland where Kirsty won silver in

all three of her events for the age 13–14

category. Lizzie competed in the Senior

Women’s Open division and won bronze,

silver and gold medals. Lizzie was

also named first overall in the senior

women’s category.

Lizzie was named Junior Sportwoman

of the Year at the North Canterbury

Sports Awards, and received a

MainPower Youth Sports Scholarship.

Jakarta Klebert (Year 5) won two silver

medals for syncro and individual and

had a fifth place in double mini at the

Trampoline Nationals.

Trap Shooting

Jimmy Field (Year 11), Mason Gardener

(Year 11), John Rassie (Year 12), Robert

Thomson (Year 12) and Sam Oxley

(Year 12) placed first equal in the

Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Trap

Shooting Competition. Sam was

awarded the Best Shooter prize.

Three StAC students were among the overall winners of this year’s Zonta

Awards. Caitlin Dore (Year 13) won most outstanding achievement by a

student with a disability; Cameron Bailey (Year 13) won best all-rounder

(male); and Charlotte Elley (Year 13) won best all-rounder (female).

Lizzie Stevenson (Year 10) received a highly commended for trampolining;

Ari Graham (Year 11) received highly commended for best all-rounder

(female); and the mixed tennis team (Michal Matson, Lily Bray, Lawrence

Darling, Nic Jenkins, Holly Matson and Shawn Nicholls) received a highly

commended for most outstanding team.
