Every year St Andrew’s students throw themselves
enthusiastically into World Vision’s 20 and 40-Hour famines.
Led by the community service groups, StAC this year raised
an impressive $18,000 for World Vision projects in Malawi. The
College was awarded the ‘Greatest Improvement’ Award at the
World Vision conference in Auckland.
Rose Oakley and Ben Methven - the school’s Community
Service Leaders - received a platinum award from World Vision
for the school’s efforts, an award given to only five per cent of
schools across New Zealand. In addition, Jack Duff (Year 12)
was awarded a Sanitarium Scholarship that enabled him to
attend a World Vision Leadership Camp during the holidays.
The camp offered Jack an opportunity to meet other secondary
school students from around New Zealand with a similar
interest in not-for-profit organisations like World Vision and the
work that they do.
Jack says he found the experience very motivating. “It was an
amazing and unique experience. I had a great time, met some
incredible people and now feel empowered and motivated to
make a difference.”

TEDx
Talking
at
Hannah Hudson (Year 10)
impressed the audience at
TEDxChristchurch this year
with a 10-minute discussion
on the infrastructure and land
transport systems in the city.
She used the frameworks as
an example of her journey
through the Future Problem
Solving (FPS) process. FPS is
an international programme
that poses complex global
and community issues, which
participants break down and solve. Participants have
to identify the underlying causes of the problems and
propose solutions.
Last year, Hannah won the 2013 National Middle Division,
and earned a spot on the New Zealand team that
travelled to an international FPS conference in Iowa.
She says it took three drafts to get her speech up to
TEDx standards, but was proud of the finished effort.
Hannah was given a standing ovation when she finished
her speech with the promise that; “We need to teach
our students how to think, not what to think. Teach us to
solve problems and we will tackle them ferociously. Give
us young people the tools and frameworks, and we will
achieve the impossible.”
